as someone who sorta gets it, it's really very simple: u watch soap operas? of course u don't, no one does anymore
so, u may not quite understand the appeal of those things. u see, the appeal of soap operas is that they're essentially emotional porn. they're cheap sentimentality for people who wanna feel some feels but don't wanna take the effort to really think too hard about what they're seeing and hearing
tumblr with it's constant state of lacrimation is trying to go for that same kind of easy emotion
new to the internet years back, it worked on me - i was seeing these characters i had some emotional investment in, these hardasses, and these funny guys, and cold chicks, and they were in tears, and i was wondering how, how could this be happening? who hurt my favorites?
it was an easy emotional fix, and that's what works on tumblr
thing is, consume enough of this stuff, and it loses all its emotional impact. at some point, u see a character crying their eyes out, and it's in that distinctively ugly tumblr look, and u just ... chuckle
