Because Poser (as the name even says) is not a program meant for animations, but for posing. Monty was so used to it that he could not and did not want to use anything else. Everyone else also had to use Poser. Plus, they were using Poser 98, which is outdated.

Monty however knew that they eventually had to leave Poser and switch to May, but doing so would take time. Had Monty been alive then volume 4 would have like been made in Poser.

One reason they started RWBY Chibi after volume 3 was to help making the animators get used to working with Maya, as the Chibi models are much more simple.

They're using 3DSMax's Pencil Shader to render the characters while Maya is used to render out the backgrounds (Chibi meanwhile seems to use Maya for all the rendering, which makes it look a little better in comparison).

The implication in my post being that they have even less of a clue using 3DSMax then they do Maya and it makes everything look weird when the characters are rendered out in one program while backgrounds are rendered in another.

At this point though, I'm kind of concerned why they just don't farm the animation out to another company. Especially with how bad V5 looked, it probably would have been better off if it were done in India or Taiwan (or dropped of at Bardel, because fuck it, just give them every damn CGI show at this point).

I see. I think they're going for that shaded, painted look for the backgrounds while letting the characters pop with their cell shading and flatter colors. I don't think I mind it too much, it doesn't look too much different from most 2D anime, at the very least, which is probably the look they were going for.

I think Burnie is too attached to RWBY and fears outsiding work he believes RT can do themselves for cheaper. That would also explain the disaster most of their RWBY merchandise is.

I can see his fears be unfounded (seeing as macFarlane Toys is utter shit these days), but if he and his crew can't handle more than 2 series, it's going to be a necessary evil. I mean they already outsource modeling to Chinese and Spanish companies (according to the V4 & V5 credits). So why not the animation?

It'd probably be an improvement to what the in-house team did for V5.
