I think the problem it had was similar to Titan A.E.: It didn't know how to market itself. Was it for kids? Adults? Kids AND adults? How would it convince the appropriate audience to go watch it? What WAS the appropriate audience anyway?
I'm not saying it was some sort of raunchy adult comedy mind you, but it wasn't exactly a Disney fairy tale movie either. It might simply had suffered from "animation is only for kids" thing, when this movie clearly had a lot to offer to a pretty broad audience.
