There's a deep vein of narcissism and self importance involved here that influences how they take criticism, do their art, interact with the public, and spew their political opinions. There's a spark of art there, mostly with Diaz, but there's just too much arrogance in them.
Sinfest used to be good. Like, real good. It used to be good for the reason it's bad now: Tatsu's outlook has clearly had a deep influence on the tone you can track over the last decade and a half. And the art has never been a problem either. Nor does Tatsu seem to take any pleasure in shouting at people online. His actual work and online presence hasn't really changed much since long before the political shift happened. He still makes daily comics, he's still trying to make them operate the same way, it's the fundamental moral underpinnings of how he depicts his characters that have taken a swerve. He just went insane, is the best way to look at it. He's not pandering, he's not looking for attention, or self importance. He had a mental breakdown and it wound up with him believing and shoving all this nonsense into his comic. I think Tatsu may honestly hate himself in a way more pedestrian male feminists don't.
I compared it to Cerebus up thread, which might have been a generous comparison but I was mostly talking about creator breakdowns leading them to take this weird turns in their own going comics. I don't think either creator meshes well with the more familiar modern artists being terrible trends /co/ sees more often. It's a deeply personal meltdown I see in both comics, where as Dobson and Diaz are just some shitheads.
Still a shame, in the end, but it does leave me with some hope that Tastu can turn himself around someday. There's no such hope for Dobson and Diaz because they simply never earned it.
