If you actually want to git gud at technicals for backgrounds and landscapes and stuff, it's actually pretty great if you have a passing knowledge or education in architectural engineering. Chris Foss was an architect and he made some pretty batshit cool stuff. But yeah, it helps to actually understand how shit is built, it builds a sense of understanding perspective on a simpler mathematical scale than just winging it.
Alternitevaly you should look into theatre and movie set design. It's usually more about color theory than anything else but it's interesting stuff once you get into the different styles of it, like German expressionism.
