If I had no context for the ST, and someone told me that the First Order was simply a special fleet in the Empire during the OT, with their own special markings but still part of the Empire, I'd unironically believe them.
But of course there's at least a tiny bit of distinction between the two, there is NO distinction between Rebellion and Resistance.

Why AT-ACT needed to exist? AT-ATs yould make horrible cargo transports.

I can justify AT-AT's size to myself. First, they are made this way in order to intimidate the enemy. Second, it is a naturally elevated position for the guns. And the troops inside can quickly get out via ropes, so combat deployment is not a problem.
Makes some amount of sence.

But what the fuck is the deal with AT-ACTs? They are cargo transports. Which means you'd have to build special platforms for loading/unloading. From the description, they are not ment to be used in combat situations, which means intimidation tactics doesmt make sense. The size only becomes a drawback for its purpose.

They're making the same mistakes of the old EU, shoehorning AT-AT's everywhere even if role-wise it wouldn't make sense. From what their original appearance shows us, they are basically assault carriers meant to lay siege on heavily-defended fortresses with their bunker buster guns, then deploy troops to take over. And to be honest, they work fairly well at that: all weaponry facing forward, tall for maximum laser gun vantage, and lacking weapons in the body section if favor of more armor and passenger room. And tough enough to resist whatever the base defenses could toss at it.

But that same design would be horrible for stuff like guard duty (Rebels) or cargo transport (RO). They're mostly there just because they're iconic and well-known, even if it doesn't really make sense.

This is very true, I know from first hand experience. In Empire at War I would never use them for defending a planet, they have a terrible turn radius and don't move fast. Defense needs small vehicles that can move back and forth on the line depending on where they are needed. For invasions they are the perfect weapon for smashing though any and all defenses.

I agree about guard duty but cargo transport makes sense to me if you can excuse not just flying the cargo there. I mean the walkers walk from point a to point b to drop off the cargo. They don't need to defend and speed is relative when it comes to moving materials.

I don't know which version I prefer, honestly.

It does seems kind of a stretch to have the Jedi fighting for years alongside their Jedi commanders and then suddenly just murder them without questions. The chip makes a lot more sense, but at the same time, it's kind of silly and I like the idea of weighting down their loyalty to the republic against their loyalty to their commanders.

Yeah, that was sort of what I was getting at. It makes sense once you realize that it came from The Force Unleashed, which was trying just a little too hard to be a dark and edgy SW game

they shot space planes out of the fucking sky in ESB, they aren't immaneuverable at all

While I had no problem with Rebels showing stormies as complete boobs, I do admit I think it really underestimated the capabilities of the AT-AT's. Those things were frighteningly effective in ESB. No inaccurate bad guy movie syndrome at all here.

There are 3 simple things they could have done to not make TFA feel like a rehash of ANH

1) Keep Jakku as a marshy junkyard world instead of making it Tatooine
2) Do not do another cantina scene
3) Keep Starkiller but just make it a heavily defended manufacturing base instead of literally showing it next to the Death Star and having Han ask "how do we blow it up?"

Simple, the FO has developed some kind of bomb capable of causing a runaway blackhole. Starkiller is able to drain suns and convert them into this blackhole bomb, and it takes a long time, so they only have one.

at least then it would be visually different

I've been busy lately, so I haven't had the chance to finish up my encyclopedic listing of all the clone trooper, and probably won't have a chance til tomorrow, but I wanted to ask which would you guys prefer I do first: list all the specialized armor and gear variants and so on of clones, or describe all the various colorful regimental liveries and regalia that distinguish rank and organization? I'll probably only get a chance to do one tomorrow, and finish the other the next day.

I also think Finn should have been the new Jedi and MC and Rey should have inherited the falcon (and chewie) from Han and just been a clever scavenger. I like Finn and it would have been cool to see him go from cowardly ex-stormtrooper who gets his spine sliced by Kylo to eventually fighting him evenly in Ep 9 after training with Luke.

Literally just switch Finn and Rey's roles.

The 'big threat' can come from the FO's very existence-The galaxy has been at peace since the end of the galactic civil war, and the rise of a small but violent paramilitary group like the FO needs to be put down now, before it grows into something even uglier later. That's enough, and it tuns the conventions of the OT on its head because suddenly it's the 'good guys' that are a large yet unwieldly military force fighting the small but nimble 'bad guys'.

Sprinkle some light side/dark side fuckery in there and you've got a servicable Star Wars saga

HOWEVER, the absolute mastermind that is John Williams snuck in some kino pottery for Kylo and Anakin.

When Kylo kills his father, you can very clearly hear echoes of the music that plays when Anakin is crying on Mustafar.

That, I believe, was completely intentional from Williams, especially considering these are the two most recent scores he has done for the series, and it probably went completely over JJ's head.

I have this problem with TFA where even if I'm in the mood to watch it, by the time Hosnian gets blown up I tune out because I know how it ends. So I just skip ahead to Kylo's fight, because that is still a really goddamn good lightsaber duel. I prefer Finn's short showing to the Rey section though.

Generally, I just really like Kylo and Finn. Story should have been about them being rivals. One guy who wants in on the FO and another guy who wants out.

Technically, the TIE's should all now be TIE AX1's, because IIRC those were supposed to eventually replace the TIE Fighters.

But Inteceptors/new design were also logical progressions, anything but sticking with the TIE.

The only reason TIE's were used was because they had the resources to pump out endless amounts of them. The First Order are UNDERDOGS, they can't afford to fucking do that. God fuckign DAMNIT JJ

Why do most modern representations of the Y-wing have these goatse ass-cheek spread bars? I've never seen this model greeble on the original ILM props but then they started appearing in the late 2000s and now they're everywhere, even in proper canon material - the Rogue One Visual Guide shows the new 3d model used in the movie with em, and now so does Battlefront 2 and I think even Star Wars Rebels (later season 3)

Another good test is to listen to the credits and pick out every theme you recognize and the character(s) or scene(s) it goes with.

>watch TFA for the first time

The more tracks you can recognize, the better it is. Obviously the best baseline comparison is the first viewing of each film, but a since that's practically impossible the results will probably always be skewed towards your most-viewed film (unless you've somehow viewed each movie an equal number of times). RotS is probably the one strange exception because most of the music in the credits is from other films, which is fitting for being the last (as we knew it) Star Wars film.

I don't get how someone can be so adamant in sticking as close as possible to the original movies, making basically a remake of ANH beat for beat, and still fuck up the Star Wars feel completely.

The entire thing feels off. The helicopter shots, the shaky cams, the dutch angles, the bland as hell new character, the plot that warps itself around making Rey look cool instead of giving us just a honest, humble hero, but the biggest misstep of them all is the complete lack of setting scale and world building. Everything in previous movies evoked a larger, living breathing galaxy. From background designs, to dialogue bits. TFA is just what you're seeing on-screen, it's a movie too busy trying to make itself look cool that it forgets to develop its own mythology.

I'm not any kind of cinematography expert, but to me it felt claustrophobic. It's all good up until Rey meets Finn and then, they start running. And they don't stop running. When they get aboard Han's ship, it should have slowed down, given us a minute, but within 10 minutes we're at space langoliers and then we jump to Maz and from there it never pauses again for a single fucking moment except when they're wondering what to do about Starkiller Base.

JJ didn't let the world breath, even though he had plenty of oppurtunity to. It's a thing he does, he makes tight action movies. That doesn't work for Star Wars, it needs somebody with a wider lense.

Exactly, the whole thing feels off. A New Hope is comfy as fuck, it's always slowing down between action scenes, giving us time to breath and take in the world we're seeing. TFA tries to do that at some points but it's always right in the middle of two really intense action scenes that even the slow parts have a sense of urgency to them.

Wondering what happened during the last 30 years and how these characters evolved? Well too bad, Han's literally gone back to being a smuggler with chewie, Leia's still a princess turned rebel general, R2 and 3PO are still around and the same as always, etc.

The new Vader comic went out of it's way to give a name to the exile that Jedi take when they are no longer with the Order, but don't turn to the dark side. Also just so happened to be during the build up to TLJ.

This, and Kylo, are the smartest things in the new trilogy and from what I understand they're the things JJ had the least to do with

Kylo was already a solid concept when he came aboard, and they simply POSED him the question of "Luke is missing, where'd he go?"

They also can't even afford to make super weapons that are on par, let alone surpass, those of other powers, but they still know enough to not copy ancient designs, just old ones. And even though they domestically manufacture new tanks based on old technology, they at least have the wherewithal to import the newest vehicles when possible.

Sort of like the refit of the Iowa-class, where we pulled several rightfully obsolete battleships out of retirement to give them half-assed upgrades so we could gloat about it to the Soviets. It was a huge waste of time because even during the Iowa's heyday it was nearly obsolete, the upgrades merely patched the ship up to be inferior at a roll that newer, smaller ships were better at (at less cost to boot).

Minus the hero part, you're correct. At the point in the movie where it happened, there was no time to have a big memorial or funeral scene. Nobody stopped for a breath that we ever saw that would allow for that. Rey immediately went off to find Luke, Finn's in a coma, and Leia got to work leading the Resistance again.

Besides, Rian already said that Han has a strong presence in TLJ despite not physically being there. I'd bet that his name comes up a lot and no doubt his memory influences Kylo's arc heavily.

The emperor wanted to stop being constantly delayed and interrupted in his quest for immortality so he wanted a weapon that would impose his will on the galaxy through fear.

Starkiller base is believed to be Ilum or one of its Moons and the empire started housing the weaponry on before the fall of the empire with the first order finishing it.

The first order then used it to strike at the heart of the republic and remove the constant dominance from their neighbor that kept them from expanding or building any major military.

I doubt we will see a 4th battlestation/planet instead it will probably be an eclipse battleship or similar in episode VIII.

I know this aggravated people but I saw it as just another obvious clue that Rey is Luke's missing daughter. Han and Leia probably had a conversation about it off-screen which is why Leia hugs her and immediately trusts her to go off and find Luke instead of someone like Poe.

If that turns out not to be the case then yeah it's unforgivably bad writing.

Rey should just be Rey. I want her line of "I'm nobody" to be literal. It'd be nice if sometimes a completely random orphan can just be super gifted in the force - why not?

I'm OK with her being related to Obi-Wan or Sheev though.

My gut feeling is that she is, but even then I'm not 100% sure. I don't have any problem with stories about other force-sensitives but the saga is ostensibly about generations of family, and it seems wrong to me for the main protagonist to be an OC, especially given all the special treatment she gets from the established characters. Kylo is important and will probably be redeemed but he is certainly not the protagonist that the movie follows.

It also makes for nicer pottery IMO.

Just finished Phasma. Pretty fun book, and now I actually see Phasma as a real villain. The novel also introduced a real neat character to the canon, which I thought was actually more interesting than Phasma herself.

The truth is that there is no right answer, some tend toward adopted families and some to blood. That's because, and the novel really drives this home, she isn't cartoonishly traitorous. She'll play her part of a good soldier and leader, and completely devote herself to the FO, right until she doesn't need to anymore. The novel isn't perfect, but her characterization was pretty good.

I just can't see Rey being a Skywalker when Maz's whole advice to her was to leave the past behind and find her own belonging. Her past was longing for her blood family to return. Moving forward, then, means letting that go and finding her own family. That arc doesn't work if she's a Skywalker. It does work, though, if she finds a family within the Skywalker despite them not being her blood.

Another important piece you're all forgetting: Rey's casting was race-blind. Non-white actresses got into the running but ultimately weren't chosen. So resemblance to Skywalker family women were not always intended.

Plus, Rey's reaction to Maz's words basically solidifies it as meaning "leave the past behind". If it was a "go forth and find the family who left you instead of waiting for them to arrive" call, I imagine Rey would be proactive and not conflicted. The conflict is because Maz is telling her to move on from a family who is never returning, the people she's been waiting for her whole life.

It falls flat because up to that point the comic hadn't depicted him as anything but a general ace pilot who was already comfortable in a leadership role and didn't really do anything too reckless and wasn't especially cocky so I don't know what they're doing anymore.

I can't wait to hear what he's done for TLJ.

TFA had a few good pieces(March of the Resistance, Rey's Theme, The Jedi Steps, Scherzo for X-Wings, Snoke) but overall it was a letdown, especially since it didn't have the London Symphony Orchestra, which made everything sound off(just compare the TFA opening theme to the one for the prequels and the OT ones. It just sounds wimpy in comparison)

Has there ever been a ship more needed than the U-Wing? It's incredible that we somehow went 20 something years without an iconic Rebel Dropship/Shuttle. I don't care if a movie uses CG as long as it looks good. There are people (you can find them on facebook and reddit) that will throw a tantrum even when the CG is good, just on the principle that practical effects are the only thing that should ever be used.

When the TFA hype train was happening a friend of mine was making a HUGE deal about how TFA was going to use practical effects and cited the stupid pig cow thing. That is the only reason I remember it, because he went on for a few solid minutes about it

That joke about gobbling up uninspired nostalgiabait would work perfectly in context of TFA. Except they loved TFA, and that joke was used to mock people who enjoyed Rogue One instead. Fucking retards.

exactly, I don't remember much clapping while watching R1, but TFA was so obnoxious because there was so much clapping that the filmmakers purposefully put periods of silence in the movie for that

After Solo showed up, my audience stopped clapping at all the nostalgiabait. Not sure if people were catching on with how cookie-cutter/similar the movie was getting, or if the clapping was justgetting tiring.

When Leia walked out and the movie clearly pauses for you to react, my theater was silent, and honestly it was just kind of embarrassing by that point.

Rogue One on the other hand, my theater was electric. No clapping and cheering, but I could feel the entire room was sucked into the movie. I'll never fucking forget how intense it felt when Vader showed up.

It's just a meme that normies use because they really have no idea what their talking about. CGI can be really good, even the three monsters that were in the Petranaki arena from Geonosis looked far better and realistic than the pig. If Lucas updated it by fixing the lighting and maybe fix up the texture in some areas, the CGI would look GOAT because they were designed well from the beginning.

I'm not going to lie, I was one of those people who believed all those "Lucas only used CGI" memes and even thought bringing JJ would be a good thing. Mind you, this was before I even started coming here. I was annoyed because I was genuinely excited for the movie myself and fell for his bait with all this "we're shooting in real film and going back to the old roots". I even remember articles and social media sites posting non-stop set pics of them using "real" smoke in the desert as opposed to CGI smoke, and I remember they said on twitter that the Falcon in the very first teaser trailer was entirely practical. I even thought they actually used a model of the crashed tie fighter when they showed it on the reel. Turns out it was all bullshit after I watched the video of the special effects. What a hypocrite.
