The opening of the scene is the adults talking to adults about adult things. Big Bird, our child surrogate, enters the scene and the adults direct their attention, but Big Bird was not the center of attention previously.
This is not a thing that happens in children's entertainment these days. When there are adults, like in Caillou, their world revolves entirely around the child, and are never shown having jobs, friends, or discussions that are not about the child.
This is a very important lesson we can teach children, and it's completely ignored today: Your parents are there for you, and they love you and will care for and support you, but they are separate human beings with their own lives, thoughts and needs. It's an important step in empathy education, that other people are not you and your world is not their world, and it's completely ignored.
