Achenes are more like the stony core: dry, hard and bear the seed inside, like in dandelions (each white hair you blow is an achene). In strawberries each dot is an achene, the edible, red tissue is just there to hold them togheter, and as the fruit is better known as the whole structure, it's called a poli-achene.
