Because WB was being idiotic and wanted to do a King Arthur Connected Universe. There are multiple sequels planned. Warner just doesn't learn about counting chickens too early.

According to reviews, the film had random inserts that are clearly meant as sequel hooks, you know, like the BvS Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg cameos.

Brendan Fraser probably could have turned into a new Indiana Jones type character, if he wasn't stuck with Mummy 2 being a recap of the same villain and 3 being another undead, just Chinese.

The studio almost could have had Fraiser fighting all the classic public domain monsters, using his excuse as an archaeologist. But sadly back then the idea of connected universes didn't exist.

I went and checked my online source, and it seems the original plan was to have origin stories for every major character. For example, having a whole film on just Merlin. However it seems that was actually scrapped early and they were simply hoping this film works, so that they can make sequels if possible.

I dunno, but I suppose you could focus on various knight's questing. Galahad and all that. Arthurian Legends often lack Arthur. Have some go out doing their own movies periodically while making core Arthur movies, maybe some crossing over here and there outside the core Arthur flicks, and eventually reunite the Round Table for big movie event, Grail Quest, Avalon, culminating in Mordred v Arthur, with Arthur's rest in Avalon.

You know fuck I kinda want this now. I imagine this movie would kill my desire for the WB specifically to pull it off, though.

Which is weird, because King Arthur in certain ways is the anti-Game of Thrones, with focus put on responsibility and nobility, but also there is already material to make it Game of Thrones. You have the war against the other kings to secure Arthur's rule, Arthur killing all of the sons born in May in an attempt to get his bastard child killed, a knight getting poisoned at a feast held by Guinevere which leads to many suspecting her, people like Lancelot and Balin getting away with being psychotic little shits because they are good knights, and hell, even the story of Tristan and Isolde involves politics and murder, etc. All of the stuff that is popular with today's crowd is already present in the original myths.

Its like they ignored the stuff that is already there that could be made into the political, dark, 'deconstruction' of fantasy Game of Thrones attempts to be and instead just slapped together some shit and called it a day.

You have to remember that my chart was about Sony as a whole, not Sony Pictures. And as such 2016 Sony Pictures actually lost a lot of money, and PS4 is keeping the lights on.

Homcoming is nice and all, the issue is that the studio executives are terrified of Homecoming being successful without any of them able to take credit for it. That was why they are claiming they want Venom and Black Cat films that are not in MCU, because then they, theoretically, can rescue their own careers.

The Redstone's nixed that deal, Viacom didn't want that due to the fact it needed an actual CEO and not a babysitter. The CEO of CBS didn't want the job and Viacom hired the guy that was in charge of the International Business. it's actually sort of doing better this year and has beat it's quarterly estimates twice this year.

Yes, there are.

First of all it was made by WB, second people aren't used to Arthurian legends as they are to superheroes, third it was solely made to sell the shared universe gimmick and finally most of those characters are virtually unknown, meaning they don't gather enough interest to be successful, and of course they don't have a brand that can carry them unlike the MCU.
Even the Monsters thing is struggling despite having characters that everybody knows about like Kong and Godzilla.

The thing about the film industry, is that if you add all megahits and all the bombs together, the industry as a whole barely makes any money at all.

In one calculation, it is estimated that if you put your money in a bank, you would earn more money than if you invest in Hollywood films. Yes, mega hits earn billions, but billions are lost every year as well by those who fail. So on average the profit is low. And if Disney is making money hand over fist, it means someone somewhere in a different part of Hollywood is burning money and having nothing to show for it. King Arthur 2017 is just one example.

The film had a long and drawn out development. At some point sunk cost fallacy sinks in.

On the other hand, it seems the film itself isn't badly made. It just isn't exciting enough to be watched over other block busters that are coming up.

Secret Life of Pets did really well, lots of tie-in products sold. Sing also did well. Illumination proved and pushes products besides minions.
