>>87861112I fear that a little. The theme will dictate which option happens.
The overall theme is about Star having to grow up. Plot-wise, she must become responsible and mature enough to be the next queen of Mewni.
Now: Must she date Marco to succeed? No.
Would it stop her from becoming queen? No.
This is why it's hard to tell. BUT: a hero must always sacrifice a part of her to become a queen/jedi/avatar/whatever, so Star may have to get over her jealousy and just let go of Marco.
HOWEVER:
In the Blood Moon Ball episode, the lesson was for Marco, who learned to give Star some space.
Then, in the finale, Star had to sacrifice her powers to save Marco.
THEN it is hinted that Star is in denial about the fact that she has a crush on Marco. And THAT's when Jackie comes along. She doesn't hide her feelings, she knows what she wants, she understands Marco's and her own feelings and how to handle it. She just casually asks Marco out like its not a big deal. And that's when Star begins to realize she missed her chance.
So back to the original question: would getting Marco back require her to grow up? Yes. Yes it would, because first she must get over her jealousy and THEN be more honest about her feelings and take risks like Jackie was able to do.
So, in conclusion, because first letting go of Marco and -then- confessing her feelings to Marco would require her to grow up the most, that's what is going to happen. When it does, Marco may or may not feel the same way, but in the end, the Starco ship will set sail like a glorious Fenix from the ashes of doubt, because after all the sacrifice and growth, the heroine gets her prize and even a "progressive" writer wouldn't want to ignore the hard work and pain that the character has been put through. In stories, especially ones that end happily (and come on a disney animation will), all the pain will be worth it and more.
