I don't have anything against the animation, but the only thing that bothers me is the Decepticons.

It's as if they too the idea with the original RiD and simply turned them into not!Predacons. Only difference that they turn from a robot/animal hybrids into vehicles and vice versa.

It's like they really ignored those Fall of Cybertron comics that were supposed to bridge the game and Prime.

Hell, the fact how they made Grimlock was a slap to the wrists. Instead of a nigh-unstoppable engine of destruction we get a goofball.

The show confuses me.

Like, okay. This is ostensibly supposed to be shortly after Prime which was about a war between two sides.

But in this setting it seems that any criminal is branded a Decepticon, including Grimlock who was apparently just clumsy. Also they throw legitimately crazy people like the Frog into the same category.

That raises a lot of weird moral questions, even if you ignore the political villainization that comes from the Prime sequel part of it. It makes the whole thing weird and uncomfortable.

The fanbase didn't become a flaming trashpile until 2006 when the first movie was on the horizon. Sure there were annoying geewunn fucktards but they were just a vocal retard or two.

When the hype for the movie started it brought in a LOT of people in the fanbase based on nostalgia alone. And then most of them found out that Transformers didn't die with G1 and that it continued and went WAAAH MUH CHILDHOOD BEST EVERYTHING ELSEE SUCKS REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

And then the "new" fans who were only interested in the movies came in and started going "FUCKING GEEWUNN FAGGOTS GO DIE REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE"

and there was no peace in the fanbase ever again.

I've spoken to the show's story editor at Phoenix Comic Con about this, he said the Autobots are not branding any criminals Decepticons, they just have separate prison ships and prisons for criminals who were also Decepticons because that would be a really easy way to cause internal-gang-wars. He pointed out Drift's minicons were criminals but were never branded anything.

Fun story he told: Season 1's finale bad guy was going to be maximum security prisoner Galvatron who is not Megatron, but Hasbro demanded for it to be Megatronus because the movies were going to use Galvatron as a guy that is Megatron, kid's could've been confused.

Funnier story: Strongarm's original name was going to be Rip and Sideswipe's Fastlane, but the request to change it from Hasbro came so late into recording proccess they had to have an entire session of people re-saying names in lines for multiple episodes. It was a fun day.

The movies are all based on the G1 cast redoing things from the G1 cartoon (3 being Ultimate Doom and 5 being Deception in King Arthur's court,) the comics are a continuation of G1, only G1 characters get toys and they're all G1 based on G1, the games were intended as prequels to the G1 cartoon, Devastation is an entire game of G1 pandering, the MP line has been all G1 pandering until this year (which has caused outright rage and calls for the line to flop.) There isn't one non-G1 character with a Generations toy on the shelves right now, and we're only getting a Tidal Wave next year as a pretool for Broadsides.

Yet all G1tards do is say it isn't enough. You don't see movies based on Prime, Beast Wars, or Armada, yet G1 gets 5 and they're still unhappy. You are literally angry RiD even exists when it barely gets any toys at all, and they have a quarter of the budget G1 gets.

Fucking kill yourself. G1 niggers should be gassed.

Contrarians will say it was bad from the start, autists who insist on things lining up neatly will say it was bad from Dark Cybertron onwards, reasonable people will say it was bad after issue 40, and people with even more shit taste will say it never got bad.
I thought the season 2 finale was okay though. Not great, but not garbage. I'm reasonably hopeful that it'll get better.

Getting it wrong doesn't suddenly not make it shit writing. Roberts wanted to pull the rug under the people. He thinks that CURAAAAAZY TWISTS is what people want and expect from him. So surprise this complete non-entity of a character is actually Tarn and all the hints at it being Rolelr was just an elaborate red herring!

Roberts is schizophrenic in his writing like that. He wants his audience to read his comics multiple times, he wants them to study and analyze ever panel and every word and every implication but then he gets butthurt when it turns out that he isn't that good of a mystery writer and people bust out his twist (see the quantum engine arc). So now he's resorting to bullshit twists for the sake of a twist.

Honestly come to think of it the only thing at which he was good at was world building, and he's been neglecting that in favor of Dr Who wannabe monsters, sitcom references and overwritten unfunny "humor".

Fully committing to either way would be fine but Roberts couldn't decide if he wanted Tarn to be a secret character that isn't too obvious and definitely isn't Roller or someone who was important to Optimus and autobots and who the audience would recognize, so he went with Glitch who is a little bit of both and has no impact either way.

I have no problem with Roller being a red herring. The problem however is that a red herring is only successful if the actual final reveal is successful and engaging.

The reason why we were engaged with Roller is because there was SOMETHING to him. He was Prime's bff from back in the day, he has a personality with his juice box, he had self doubts about not being good enough because he hang out with literal cybertronian super heroes. It's little but it's SOMETHING.

Glitch has nothing. Like literally NOTHING going on for him. If instead of spending time on personality ticks, or sitcom references we got an issue or two with Glitch having any sort of personality given to him, the twist would be effective. I'm primarily a BW fan, and I'd honestly agree with this. BW fans are the first to cry GenWunner,the first to shit on other aspects of the franchise and new series, the first to cry about lack of attention.

And honestly it's because our favorite series is the outlier. Its the most unlike Transformers. Our favorite series is effectively an odd little period in the late 90's before things went back to "normal". Its barely Transformers as most people know it, and that's what makes it frustrating. I almost wish BW was its own, independent entity or a spin-off so it could try and survive or die on its own merits, rather than just be a tangent of a bigger line.

Also it's super hard for anyone new to get into BW. I see a lot of people who got into the franchise via comic give the old cartoon a try to laugh at the 80s cheesyness but nobody wants to give BW a second look because of the "weird 90 cgi" and because "it's not transformers enough" because all the later series ignored everything about it so much that it really is just a 90s outlier.

The problem is that G1 gets catered to a lot in partial ways. The hardcore G1 fans want something more completely dedicated to g1 instead of half-measures, where as al the fans of later stuff are so tired of G1 stuff popping up here and there they're tired of it. Back in the early 2000's, Just getting reissues and dreamwave comics pleased g1 fans. Then we got alternators and MP Optimus, and people wanted more; they wanted those designs to be in something new. Then we got Classics, with a starscream toy that looked close to the animation, and now people wanted toys that look faithful to the original 80's stuff , but with better sculpting and articulation. They got another G1 reimagining series, but then they want an actual animated series. All the teasing just makes them want more.

The hardcore G1 fans are primarily G1 cartoon fans, and they want a cartoon, not a comic. Thats the issue.

If we are talking about the entire international fandom, it's because many of these people were never exposed to the comic. Transformers to them is the cartoon. And the comics to them are just something particular to the Western fandom.

The problem is they won't be happy with ANY new G1 cartoon. Like have you seen the hyper G1 cartoon fans?

They don't make cartoons like Sunbow anymore. If they made a new G1 style cartoon it wouldn't feature the old voice actors because half of them are dead or will die soon. It won't have the constant never ending techno-noise the cartoon called "music". The characters won't have weird hyper edited voices. The plots won't be "megatron takes over a factory to do shit and Optimus punches him".

A new cartoon won't have anything that the cartoon fanatics want and what they consider to be "good" about Sunbow. So they will be even more unhappy about it. Not to mention that it will probably be CGI because unless they hire like SUnrise to do the whole series no studio wants to deal with that much robot art. there's a reason mecha anime only have like 1 minute of robot action in them per episode.

And his original ideas of Alpha Trion was mostly based on the Funpub version that turned into a lion before they added the spaceship mode

And most of the stuff he is doing is what Aaaron Archer was against doing for Generations a) combiners and b) headmasters. I'm guessing what gets made is getting more influenced by the Takara side engineers/designers too.

Now granted it would have to have actual budget, more than like 3 characters and certainly more than 10fps and actual lip-syncing but those CGI models do prove that you can make a new G1 style cartoon and still end up looking somewhat good...on still images....

Sky-Byte was before he was in charge of the whole line I think? Most of the line at that point was IDW design and some homages to other parts of the franchise. Pretty sure he'd be in trouble if the hirer ups said "design a fucking shark" and he went "NO FUCK BEAST WARS REEEEEEE" like some people on forums would.

But it's really undeniable that after he took over that every other piece of the franchise went out of the window in favour of hyper G1 designs and G1 characters. I'd be pretty surprised if we actually end up getting a Nautica like the rumors say.

Like one of the reason why I hated Energon and Cybertron is because their CGI models are literally toys with toy kibble and toy proportions everything. Like they are just toys and it takes me out of it like you wouldn't believe.

The old team would actually bring aboard comic artists like Don and Roche to work on concept art. Thrilling 30 Springer actully has its origins in a concept that predates the debut of that in the comics. A similar thing happened early on in Classics where Don's Jetfire design was used in the comics, which just happened to debut about the same time as the toy released.

Hasbro has been using different artists now, with some exception, and with the team change the people they where in contact with are probably gone from hasbro.

RiD has a great core cast, but doesn't follow through on its setup. And it's clear that the original pitch for the show, even season one, went through changes.

Earlier bits of the first season seemed pretty steadfast on Optimus being gone and BB needing to deal with that. While kinda stock, the cast had clear directions they were gonna develop in maybe. There was also a lot of emphasis on the gang warfare bleeding into the interactions of the earth-based 'Cons and Autobot Council's issues with BB being on earth.

Halfway or so through the season, this all gets dropped and the council thing has only been briefly brought up again by Ratchet. Optimus comes back, whoop de doo. Moving into S2, the characters haven't really gone through any major changes or development. Minicon partners have become A HUGE DEAL when they weren't before in S1.

Lots of cartoons undergo major changes during initial production, but this feels like a special case.

Maybe it's me, maybe it's the stories but the way the introductions were done felt more organic. Like ok SUDDENLY FUTURE doesn't seem so weird because you'd figure that the war would go on long enough for a time skip. And the SUDDENLY ROBOT ANIMALS didn't feel so sudden when in the show they tied that with the transmutation whatever wave, which was also tied into the aliens subplot that's been going on for the entire season and that same wave was later used for mot stories.

It felt like it has a place in fiction compared to Shockwave CLONED DRAGONS that were ALWAYS ON EARTH as a part of MEGATRON'S PLAN because REASONS. And then after all the hype for cloning dragons....none of them actually appear and are all aborted.

it just felt so much more forced than transmetals or S3.

They where made because they where part of anniversary years. That, plus the new guy wanting to focus on G1 is why we don't see any more. Meanwhile Takara feels there's enough of an audience of BW fans to dedicate to of their higher end releases of the year to the franchise.

I absolutely agree with this. Robert's strength early one was the fact that he coupled his dialogue with snippets and glimpses into the past history as well as highlighting all the different ideologies that drove the tfs whether it be decepticonism or functionalism or the religious beliefs that Cyclonus and Drif followed. None of that is there anymore.

I mean for a season dedicated to Megatron there is very little about the beliefs that drove him to wagering his genocidal war. Same for the history all we got were the characters making Megatron and some stuff about MTOs.

Getting 13 characters I mostly care about that makes for a nice, tidy display seems way more appealing than a cluster-fuck where you get to the point where you're only buying a character because the original toy was released in a given year. Yes, it's RID. You see more of it because stores order more of it period. But all Hasbro reports lately said the same thing, RID sales were driving force and they grew in a way that led to much smaller non-movie year drops than usual (Hasbro's CEO mentioned that TF3 to Prime drop was 50%, from TF4 to RID the drop was more of a 25%)

But like, in my area I still see Generations Doubledealer while RID has gone by and Titan Returns will start soon apparently without me ever seeing Combiner Wars around. Anedoctal evidence is worthless, to everyone, specially in a worldwide brand whose stock varies from country to country to continent and so on.

But the Generations line IS getting stronger, it used to be only 10% of revenue, Combiner Wars boosted that to around 30% thanks to the combining gimmick clicking even with kids that don't know the media, which is no doubt why Titan Returns is trying to do a kid-friendly gimmick once again, so who knows what's gonna happen.

Nah, kids drive everything, because guess what, they grow up to usually like what their parents like, as long as the parents encourage them. Seen it happen first hand with a few people I know, raising their little crotch spawn on D&D, G1 episodes and Generations stuff, old school videogames, etc.

Hell, RiD is just a gateway for kids loving robots as a whole. It can and most likely will lead them to exploring the franchise later on when they grow up.

I hate how they made the press a bunch of nobodies. Season 1 at least had some final buildup with optimus coming though while season 2 just teased for a few episodes "hey there are some unknown enemiess" before the season ended. Bumblebee and his team treat all these guys like a serious threat but they all sorta feel lackey level with a few even worse because they're just a bunch of rejects /crazy fugitives wanted for small stuff like vandalism or theft. Titanmaster shit is going down in ExRiD and TAAO with Sentinel Prime fucking up shit.

Then they'll crossover with the other IDW properties in the Revolution event once that's done ExRid will become Optimus Prime MTMTE willl become Los Light, dunno what will happen with TAAO.

Everything should be back to normal after Revolution ends although Kup and Blackrock will make their own team with Action Man and one other TF will be going to Gi Joe.

Annexing Earth was a horrendous idea but he's actually pretty competent at the moment. He killed Galvatron, something that should have been done while D-Void was still fucking Cybertrons shit up.

I like Cybertrons societal and political struggles. Personally, l also feel exRiD at its best is even better than MTMTE at its best. Those Dark Cybertron preludes featuring Shockwave and Soundwaves pasts are what sold IDW for me. Who wrote those?

Because we're hitting another jumping-on point for new readers and it's easier for them to get into Lost Light #1 than MTMTE #58. It's all about sales, and usually it works. It didn't for All Hail Megatron.

Hoping the next show after RiD will be better.

How much would I give for another Beast Wars. Uprising is fun (and introduced a new Transmutate), but killing off at the very beginning freaking Primal, Rhinox and more is kinda...hard to describe.
