The reason is he puts the heroes through an equal amount of shit as pulling them out of it. Q sends Picard and Co through near infinite pain and misery, but also helps them in many other ways.
Same thing with Aaron Marx. I like him because he is equally an antagonist to Wally/Holly as he is a protagonist. He saves their lives, but Flask dies. He orchestrates the milk trials, and Holly tries to kill herself. He is (probably) running the simulations, which we can all see has cost us many waifus.
I'd agree with him being forced, though. Q works because he's only in about 12 episodes. Aaron Marx is EVERYWHERE.
