She's still an animal, but now has to fight against her own instincts when she became a part of a world bigger than her original one (climbing trees and eating stuff) all so she can stay with the person that gave her a chance at that life. There a lot to take into consideration:
She now has a longer life-span.
Biologically her brain is bigger, so more complex with her thoughts (I've seen a lot of fiction ignore that).
She's in a world that relies more careful planning than "not getting stepped on."
"Mating" isn't just going to someone and fucking (... well, it kinda is, but that's not the point for a romance).
There's possible rivals and sometimes having to fend off people going for her. She is a cutie.
She was a squirrel. Nothing really all that unique unless she's in a tree-climbing competition. Not very strong.
