So to nobodies surprise, the Battle of Jakku looks great, but the content is lacking, and it's glaringly obvious at this point.

Plus Turning Point literally only has 1 playable map.

Also, I tried looking for nods to Lost Stars, but I gave up because there is literally fucking hundreds of things falling fro the skies, or already crashed to the ground. I don't think I have the sanity to try and see if any of them is an individual nod to the book.

On the plus side, that Targeting Rifle is perfect, got 30 kills on my second game of Turning Point with it.

You're thinking of the Inflictor, a regular Star Destroyer.

The one in the WebM is the Ravager, the final SSD in the Empire (Which you also see on Sullust taking off)

It is currently unknown if Rae Sloane is aboard the Ravager, but I suspect she is. Seemed to be building up to that in Aftermath.

I'm a few chapters deep into Star Wars Battlefront Twilight Company.

Wow, have all Star Wars audiobooks been of this quality the whole time? Or is this just a 'new movie promotion' level of quality? All the sound effects, John Williams score, they make these books a lot of fun to read. I also read Lost Stars...

I liked the Lost Stars connection in the Battlefront Jakku teaser.

I also find it interesting that the book for Battlefront doesn't feel like a shitty tie-in. The narrator is either selling this dialogue, or this is really well written...

Ree is trying to kill herself and destroy most of the ship to not fall into Rebel hands. So, it makes sense she would take it nose first seeing as how it would cause the most damage. It'd probably completely destroy it.

Would they really make the entire era Canon though? LSG have been very safe and cautious with what they add to the nucanon most of the time. I don't see them doing that when they won't even make the fantasy flight games sourcebooks canon even though they collaborated and took things from the nucanon for them. I'll be surprised if they canonise an entire game. Doesn't seem like them, they're too lazy to let that much through all at once. They're probably just making HK-47 canon and a few other things.

I read Rise of Lord Vader over the weekend and it was so much better. It lulled a little in the middle, like the stuff with the smugglers in the beginning, but for the most part is was great. Vader's suit stuff, the aftermath of Order 66, and the stuff with Bail Organa was great.

Aftermath felt like comic script turned into a book. It wouldn't surprise me if it was.

it's very much a rather obvious throwback to ANH in terms of its story, i think JJ is just gunning for getting people back into the franchise with a simple story of good vs. evil that relies on mythical archetypes obviously rey is the new "chosen one" in the archetypal sense, luke is the "wise man in the mountain", han is the old mentor, maz is the yoda, kylo is the dark knight and hux is the tarkin, snoke is the sheev, etc. the whole first act is basically ANH verbatim in terms of its structure: figure from the [rebellion/resistance] trying to escape with [plans/lightsaber/macguffin] get captured and sends [macguffin] off with [droid/droids] on [tatooine/jakku/desert planet]. good guy gets tortured by [darth vader/kylo ren/dark knight] for information and busted out of prison. droid it finds the hero, who desperately wants to get off world, and gets his/her chance when she meets [finn/han/rogue] and [obiwan/han/old mentor], escaping from the desert planet in the millennium falcon from [imperial/first order] ships. after that the plot changes around a bit but basically throws "yoda" into the middle with the wise and diminutive force-sensitive alien and goes to not-hoth at the end which also doubles as another endor due to the "we have to take down the shields so we can blow up the super weapon!" plot

The Howard Stern interview with JJ made it sound like Disney basically made a ANH 2.0 to get the next generation of Star Wars fans hooked. Rey is trying to find out how the hell Luke Skywalker is and what the hell the Jedi are. Tbh i'm prepared for disappointment. Sounds kinda boring for somebody whose more familiar with SW, aside from seeing where the franchise is going. And it pretty much means the new canon will throw most of the old EU stuff overboard for good.

Dunno. If that was really the case they could have avoided a plasma sword with vents and stormtrooper with fuckhuege electro-tonfa or an updated stormtrooper design.

I'm kinda surprised that people actually got pretty used to the Stormtrooper design by now. I would have expected more complaining, especifically about that, since it's so iconic.

In a way I'm not even sure if they did themselves a favor with that. In a way it makes the material I've seen so far seem like it's not 'real' Star Wars, but maybe it's just me.
Would have been clever to tell a new story with new characters using old design clues, similar cinematography and the same visual language as the old movies. Like the trademark, cheap looking cuts...
Trying to make the new film as flashy/modern as possible with fast cuts and shaky cam is gonna backfire.

If they really didn't want to take risks they probably should have taken some popular novels like the Thrawn ones and made adaptions of those. At the very least you could have already been able to tell whether or not those stories are popular with the fanbase and didn't have to deal with the idea that 'Disney ruined SW' if they just adapted something that was already there to proof they can make a good movie SET in Star Wars, if you get my drift. Once the people trust you with the 4 billion dollar franchise do your own thing...

Long story short, I suspect this is gonna be one of those movies that tries too hard to get the 'kids' to like it while also trying to appease the old fans by being super referential.
But maybe I'm just being pessimistic, because I'm afraid of the disappointment when Disney indeed turns out to have 'forever ruined SW'.

Really depends on what the story is.

At it's heart Star Wars is pretty popular because the story is conceptually pretty strong imo. ANH is basically textbook storytelling/writing.
The PT had terrible direction and couldn't focus or deliver at all on any of the themes and ideas it introduced. However it did add a shitton of worldbuilding.
I'll admit TCW softens my opinion on those films, because it managed to explore those things satisfyingly.

If the new film is basically just a popcorn action flick that harks back to ANH, I feel like the lack of 'substance' would play a part in how I feel about these films.

Of course it's all speculation at this point and as I said I'm somewhat pessimistic about it. I'm really curious either way though.

The one that already crashed, at least the one we see on the map, is not the Lost Stars one, because the engines are still on. I believe the book states the engines were disabled at one point. Also seems like it didn't land nose-diving like the book described/the one in the trailer.

It's also possible the Lost Stars one happens way earlier in the battle, before the Battlefront battle got so heavy.

Evidence towards this is the fact that Lost Stars doesn't mention other other ships crashing, and doesn't mention the SSD crashing, which could be inferred to suggest that it was one of the first to fall. We see the SSD crashing during the game, so...

Until we get more info, likely in Aftermath 2, it's all speculation based on bits and pieces from Battlefront, and it fits together with Lost Stars.

Some of it has. Attack of the Clones has aged the worst while The Phantom Menace has aged the best. Revenge of the Sith is middle ground, some good and some bad CGI. I still think that the CGI in the films were among the best for the time they were made in

Basically any time no one was fighting and the backgrounds weren't as blurred, the set looked like garbage and had the effect of forcing the actors to act without actually interacting with each other, meaning everyone comes off as stiff robots.

5 years later the technology made quite a leap.

So if you grew up on the newer stuff and go back to watch it I guess it's not quite as apparent.
Though he's not wrong, some of the sets do look quite artifical, though imo not because they were 'plastic looking', because that's just how Star Wars looks (Stormtroopers, anyone?).
It's more that often times the materials look samey, and the light doesn't match well. In some shot you can also see some things looking more blurred than others, which makes certain things look a little jarring, in particular with wide shot and mass scenes with the clones.
Though hero shots like most of the stuff with Grievous looks great. Grievous himself look great, just the backdrops are not quite up to the same standard sometimes, so when you see it next to each other is kind of takes you out of it.

All in all the cgi and compositing of foreground and background models look good enough though, that it doesn't pull you out of the movie.

Can't say the same about the dialogue.

I guess I just dislike the general aesthetic of the movies, but its clear a lot of work went into these sets. The miniatures still don't look quite right, but I was under the impression that they were entirely graphical, not physical with actors superimposed on them.

The reason I thought the starship hallway was cgi was because I distinctly remember the lighting being off, like there was more lighting being generated than what should have been reflected off of all the smooth surfaces, but you could achieve that affect with noting but a filter, or shit, maybe it was just my imagination.

Either way, I sit corrected.

How useful are SSDs really?

The only canon SSDs we see in battle, the Executor and the Jakku SSD, both jobbed real fucking hard. Executor died from a single A-wing and all the Jakku SSD managed to do was crash as part of the NR's overwhelming victory.

And as far as non-canon SSDs go, none of them ever achieved anything of value, aside from when Lusankya was used as a giant battering ram during the Vong war.

Yeah, I know what you mean. The point I am getting at here was that the myth about the prequels being done entirely on bluescreen is absurd when so much effort was put into all these sets and locations to avoid doing that.

There are PLENTY of things you may dislike about the prequels. Perhaps you dislike the writing? Perhaps you don't like the story, or casting? Maybe you dislike the AESTHETIC of the locations, as you say yourself.

And that's perfectly fine, nobody has to like everything in the franchise. I personally enjoy all the movies, at least to some extent.

But there's a big difference in disliking the aesthetic, and incorrectly saying you dont like it because it's CGI, and I just feel like more people should take the time out to see for themselves, because it is a pretty big misconception at this point that the Prequels were all CGI, when they actually used much more practical effects that the Original movies.

While we're on the subject, I just wanna say that the Podracing scene might just be the greatest combination of practical effects and CGI I have ever seen. The entire scene from start to finish seamlessly merges what must have been hundreds of practical and special effects. Watched TPM recently and that scene stood out immensely to me, not just to the movie, but to the entire franchise.

We don't know what it managed to do though. We see it crash and burn, but we don't see what happened before that. (It's falling right as you spawn into the game)

I highly recommend you get onto finishing the series.

The context of that video is an extremely mature arc regarding a suicide bombing, and how the Jedi respond to it.

The show, especially in the later seasons, deals with the idea that maybe the Jedi aren't the good guys. Maybe they're causing more harm than good, maybe they're making mistakes, or being hypocrits.

There's entire episodes and stories told from the villains perspectives too, and even episodes where we get to see the Seperatists point of views.

The force is very black and white, but people misunderstand that, forgetting that the characters and stories don't have to be. Interesting stuff.

Are you referring to this 2D show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVk9lPotcW4 ???

Because basically, the 3D show was designed at first to be a sequel to the 2D one, to build upon/around it. But over time, the 3D one just started to replace the 2D one in general, and now the 2D one is no longer canon.

Without spoiling too much, you have a lot to look forward too anon. The Umbara episodes, the Order 66 Conspiracy episodes.

Oh and there's a crazy budget increase from Season 3 onwards where the animation starts to get really, REALLY smooth and great to watch.

The 2D one isn't canon, so it's not completely necessary.

However it is a fun little show that's only 2 hours long, so give it a watch sometime.

It's not great, but it's not bad. It's kinda' like Samurai Jack with a Star Wars skin.

I get what you mean because at times the Sith do seem more rational than the Jedi, but they go too far with opposing the Jedi and try to become evil and that's what pushes me away from them. The Sith don't just think 'you should accept your emotions', they also think 'I should enslave people and work them to death for the satisfaction of having control over them'.

Sadly I just realized the only really rational force users are the fish things who's Queen Jar-Jar falls in love with in TCW.

That's exactly what the Jedi do too, though. They don't deny their emotions, they simply keep them in check and moderation. I'm not sure how people keep misinterpreting the Jedi as cold, emotionless robots when we've seen things such as happiness, bursts of anger, frustration and etc from them before. They're very much in touch with their emotions (some more than others), but they don't always let them control their actions

Jabba's son was just the movie. Show itself is much better. There's some hiccups in Seasons 1 and 2, but from there it becomes some of the best Star Wars stuff out there.

I'm doing everything. The movies (including the Ewok ones), all animated shows canon and Legends and yeah, the Star Wars Holiday special.
