While there are a number of various reasons for the change, the most important reason to me is that I wanted this comic to be accessible to anyone who comes across it. I did not want someone to discover the comic, believe that they would need to know the television show that inspired it to understand it, and then discard it.
As it is now, anyone can read The Secret and not feel like they’re missing something vital. Plus, I just feel uncomfortable making such a dark story with characters from a children’s show.
Someone said something akin to “Just because you change their names and hair color, doesn’t make them original.”
I found this somewhat humorous. Primarily because it sounds like I copied and pasted the art from the TV show, changed the tone of their hair, and called it mine. I don’t contest that my designs are clearly inspired from the characters on the show, but my art is just drastically different enough for this to not be a real concern of mine.
There’s also the fact that there’s nothing happening in the story or with these characters that is strictly from the show. In fact, condensing the cast to just three siblings and not having to explain where the other 8 are is just sensible.
As for the people who only see these as Loud characters… that’s okay! I’ve discovered that my pages are being edited to make them Loud House characters. Not only am I fine with that, I encourage editing art! The point of this story is for you to connect with it. If you need to have the names and hair colors tweaked for you to make that connection, then by all means, toy around with my art. I don’t believe it’s being done out of malice. I believe it’s being done out of appreciation.
