It's just like how Trey Parker found our island by watching Monty Python as a kid - he just thought they were doing funny voices for the humour value, and was amazed that there was an actual place where people talked like that.

Plus I've never heard an american do ... well, pretty much any convincing British accent, and those they aim at tend to be squarely "cockney-estuary-bingbong-gavnah". Even broad regional accents are off the table, and Peter Sallis is a very specific accent that even many English can't do. If an American voice actor could nail that, I'd be beyond impressed.
