Despite the game selling quite well the number of active players rapidly imploded, and its sales ended up having a sharp decline after the Switch started to get more multiplayer games. It just didn't have enough lasting appeal to justify something like this.

It's not totally uncommon for localizations to get held up for a while though; Udon brought over the Bayo 2 artbook that got held up by like 18 months thanks to hitting some licensing snags with SEGA.

Actually its still a success because based on budget and development, they didn't require their additional content to be a paid season pass which gives evidence that the game most likely wasn't the failure that this website wants you to believe it was. Its a shame that the online has died down heavily but that doesn't mean that overall it was a failure.

Splatoon 2 got regular updates and the like, and was talk regularly by Nintendo, even to point where one of their big pre-E3 announcements was the final Splatfest of Splatoon 2, even getting its own trailer.

And what has ARMS gotten lately? Nothing.

If ARMS was anything but a failure in Nintendo's eyes, it would've gotten something. And no "but actually" is going to change that.

Not all games get constant updates n shit, Fighting games have a lot more going into their updates than a shooter would. That's why Splatoon got a lot of updates when most of their updates were just weapon reskins with different sub and special equips. Sorry that ARMS didn't pump out enough reskinned content for ya.

A major criticism was that they kept building up all this lore but it was never fully explored within the game. Heck if I remember right the graphic novel was supposed to be their answer for the lack of a story mode. I feel like a good story mode would help sell people on a sequel.

You know, it's funny. Splatoon fell to this, Overwatch fell to this, everyone fell to it. The only multiplayer game to ever get it all right was TF2. 10/10 unbeatable gameplay, fantastic comic tie-in, and overall likable characters. And it didn't need waifushit to sell.

The bigger killer was not having a strong install base like other Nintendo titles with online such as Mario Kart and Splatoon along with being pretty bare bones on release. Everyone just moved on and seldom looked back.

ARMs is a first party Nintendo game, it should've sold more than just being on par with 1-2 Switch

What year long updates? You said it yourself its support just ended with zero fanfare by Nintendo or anyone else. If a multiplayer game, games that are designed to last years and years after release, loses support after one, then it's a failure

Arms was very clearly intended to a big deal by Nintendo, and be one of their big boy online games. It didn't, and Nintendo doesn't even seem like they care that much.

Not saying the franchise itself is dead or anything, but this game was a failure by any metric.

It doing "alright" is not good enough. All of those are mostly single player games, multiplayer games are judged by a different standard. They're supposed to last months and years after release with Nintendo still effectively developing for them

Xenoblade 2 had a significantly bigger budget than ARMS and was considered a profit though. That is not a failure thru any metric, specially when fighting games nowadays struggle to get far. TEKKEN 7 needed a price cut and years to sell measly 3 million compared to 8 millions the franchise used to do.

Because that only applies to AAA games that cost a billion dollars and even more to advertise to make you mongoloid. For a fighting game without nowhere near that amount of budget that's spectacular. Xenoblade 2 sold even less and that's considered a massive success.

Not by much, but yes. Fighting games do have higher standards by and large, since JRPGs only have one or two franchises that regularly break one million units and beyond, while fighting games have give or take 5, between Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and Tekken.

Kingdom Hearts 3 has sold more than 5 million copies, and the only games that come close are RE2 and DMCV, both of which sold 2 million each so...
