To be fair, Azzarello asked DC if they'd allow him to write Bruce Wayne as John Constantine's new gay lover. DC originally OK'd the decision, but then as Azzarello started to write the story arc they went back on the decision. This left Azzarello so enraged that he wrote a Bruce Wayne-expy in the most mean way possible and what was originally going to be a romance ended up becoming a truly love-hate BDSM mess of a... well. It became something, alright.

They thought it'd be OK as long as this was Vertigo's own version of Bruce Wayne, and strictly Bruce Wayne. But then someone realized that the Hellblazer comic could still be considered to loosely take place in the proper DCU due to all the past guest appearances and references, so they were afraid of readers thinking that it wasn't only a "Vertigo" Bruce that was gay, but proper Batman as well.

A panel from a comic where DC stopped Paul Dini from writing Batman and Zatanna together, asking instead for him to replace Zatanna for Catwoman, because they wanted to push Batcat for the umptenth time.
