The sensible choice for Disney is to pay lip service to LGBTQ rights and slowly add representation to their animations once other companies demonstrate first that yes, this level of gay is now ok and profitable and doesn't fuck things up. Currently that tolerance border is still at low-stakes animated show eps with nameless bg characters being openly gay, named major characters having some strong ambigous tension, last-second epilogue gay twist protags, and genderless nonhumans being gay-coded. None of the shows with gay in them are strong merchandise sellers, so it's okay to have them as a testing ground.
