Think about how few western cartoons really come out a year. There are... what? Maybe 4-5 cartoons in the public consciousness of /co/ that are airing at any given time? And for some of those, "airing" is a very generous term (I'm looking at you, Steven Universe, with your 6 episodes a year schedule).
Netflix has been adding some more stuff worth mentioning on the pile, but even so its still a tiny fraction of what Japan puts out.
Compare that to the 92 anime airing on TV this season, including 40 of which are new this season and not continuing from last season. And thats not even counting 'special projects' like movies or miniseries. That would add on about another 30 entries.
And everything I just mentioned is just what is counted in this winter season of anime. Once April rolls around, a whole new batch starts.
Japan is going to have more examples of pretty much everything that happens in western cartoons, because there is just so goddamn much of it. Granted a lot of it sucks because 90% of everything is crap. But the 10% of anime that is worth watching is sometimes more than the starting total that western cartoons have to work with.
