If comic writers could actually afford living in NY they wouldn't be doing comics. The city itself is just a fantasy land they can pretend encompasses amicrocosm of all of America instead of a Puerto Rican colony.

Marvel's stories take place in NYC because all the artists and writers in the 60s and 70s lived in NYC. And authors outside of comics research their settings just fine.

I've met a few comic writers in the city and they usually live in either Manhattan or Queens. These are the types that usually coast along by getting alot of contracts or have a well paying day job ontop of it.

Sure you can look up some of it but some shit you can't read about. You want a freak show? Take a numbered train at any hour of the day. Hell the Citizen App provides some good laughs for the weird crimes that go on in the city.

Seriously, any experience in any major city is enough for a starting point. There are authors who bring Tokyo, London, Cairo, Hong Kong, etc to life without setting foot in those cities. Part of being a fiction writer is taking in generalized experience and crafting a scenario out of it. You don't need to have actually ridden a New York subway to write about craziness in NYC. Ride a major metro in Atlanta or something, then research, watch videos, look up pictures, read accounts from citizens and reviews online where people often dump their crazy shit.

It may not be as compelling as first hand experience, but any asshole can do it.

Outside of the sign hollywood doesn't have many buildings that aren't iconic to people who don't already care about celebrities.
I'll give you East LA.
Downtown LA is not a particularly iconic skyline unless you live in LA.
On top of that most of the places in LA that are iconic tend towards the flatter and more spread out side of things. That's great for a noir movie, but it's limiting for something that is action focused.
