Why is Constantine the goto magic guy when Zatanna exists and is not such a dick to everyone? Is it because of Hellblazer?

I'm not sure about power levels for the magic characters of DC but I get the impression that Constantine is a lot more skilled than Zatanna. How much of that is actual skill and not him rusing everyone is up to debate.

Zatanna is easily more powerful than Constantine but her ethnics and morals would prevent her from doing certain things even if it means achieving your goals faster. Constantine's ethnics and morals are a lot more loose than Zatanna's and would be willing to do whatever is necessary in order to achieve his goals. Zatanna is who you would want on your team to stop a common bad guy. Constantine is who you would want on your team to prevent Armageddon. People are however more likely to die with Constantine than with Zatanna.

That's how their first appearance in Moore's Swamp Thing together was like.
Constantine's personal history is something like:
>Regular DCU from 1985-2000 (Swamp Thing, first 100 issues or so of Hellblazer, cameos in other DC books)
>Vertigo's editors clamp down on the DC characters who they still have (Constantine and Swamp Thing since all the other DC books that moved to Vertigo had been cancelled like Doom Patrol and Animal Man), so cameos no longer happen.
