The Swordfish looks remarkably similar to the X-59 Quiet Supersonic Transport that's currently under development. Jacobs probably didn't realize this, but the long pointed nose would be ideal for reducing sonic boom. On the other hand, he also couldn't have taken into account that with a nose that long, the pilot won't be able to see the runway upon landing. The Concordes got around this by having noses that folded down, but the X-59's nose is so long there will have to be a camera in it connected to a 4K video screen in the cockpit.

I read a couple of Blake and Mortimer albums way back when but I never really got stuck on them like I did with Tintin, Spirou and Asterix. I had no idea the story would go so gloriously bonkers.

Deeply disappointed Roman Ungern von Sternberg wasn't in charge of the Empire though.

I really like how Olrik passed himself as a prisoneer, using a flawless fake ID, killing a bunch of guards and acting like a decent human being until the ride ends.

Those scenes are straight out 19th century pulp novels. You'll recognize the 20000 leagues under the see influence, but also the Infernal War illustrated by Robida (great read, and absolutely amazing sci-fi, predicting a lot of 20th century warfare)

Jacobs worked with Herge, and at the time the studio was knee deep in technical books (see the Tintin Moon landing). I wouldn't put putting top of the line '40s aerodynamics into the book past their abilities.
After all, they correctly named the ICBMs after a chinese Thunder god (>>104223287). They obviously did their research.

On the other hand, it's really fun how the Swordfish is a "magical plane": It shoots one atomic rocket (that has no visible bay or pylon to hold it), but that aside it just flows and everything around simply explodes.There's a sort of elegance in this kind of storytelling.

It's always amazes me how radically different the secret of the swordfish in setting and scale to the later adventures which more or less took place in the "real world" compared to it's alternative reality.

It sort of feels like a non satirical version of the pre war world in Fallout.
