I enjoyed the Prime tie in comics
back in the 80s and 90s, that's all the comics were. The characters were introduced in a form that matched their toys, stories were written to tie in with that, lore was created for that purpose.
I was very excited at the headmaster sentinel prime concept, but IDW basically ignored 90% of it and didn't even give us any of the original headmasters as headmasters.
More freedom often creates poorer quality art. An artist is restricted by his canvas, his medium, and his subject. But in IDWs case, the subject has very little restriction, because the aspects that used to restrain them (being robots) have long been tossed to the wayside. They're still robots, but you can't really tell. They're not concerned with robot issues. They've lived for millions of years but suddenly if one of them goes missing for a few days everyone's fearing for their lives. A political system with no significant overhaul in 3 million years gets overhauled... 4 times in the span of 3 years? They started writing plots developing at speeds people react to, instead of ancient robots.
One of my favorite parts of the original marvel run was how Zarak and Scorponok, and mirrored in Optimus and HiQ each influenced the other quite dramatically, eventually becoming an entity that was not quite either. The merger of machine and man.
Early IDW dealt with issues like this.
But the last several years.... not so much. It's been nothing but politics, romance, and constantly having "the good guys" be revealed as the bad guys, and vice versa.
It feels like they think tired old cliches are still hip and edgey.
