There are certainly some cases where it's socially unacceptable to affirm something you do, and more acceptable to affirm you don't.
All things that we criminalize, for starters. It's not acceptable to brag about your thievery or violence, and fairly acceptable to proclaim how you never stole anything I your life, or that you never hurt a fly.
However, the same often applies to things like sexual preferences.
Also, thing is, in many cultures the refusal to participate in a locally dominant religion is an active choice. You are raised a Christian, or a Jew, or a Muslim from birth, taught those religious values, pressured to attend mass and celebrate religious holidays.
You can't exactly say that it's the same as not collecting stamps, because stamp collectors are not actively shaping your surroundings.
