Well to be fair, if they kill him it won't stick. It would be him getting seriously injured and the others unable to recover him, a "no one could survive that" situation, or he actually does die and gets brought back by quintessence. But all three would be good character development for himself and the others. If it happens the reunion episode would be great.

He won't die precisely because he's the "everyman" type of character in contrast to Keith's Luke Skywalker-esque traditional hero. He's also beloved by the writers who probably want to see him get a happy long-term end.

I don't think anyone cares enough about him to get developed by his death. Maybe Hunk but it would make him all serious and angsty and that would be kind of a drag to watch on top of turning all the character dynamics too somber. I really don't think this show can pull off sustained drama well, you need the breather moments.
