...I’m nowhere near as bad as Cerebus, but I relate to him more than I’d like to admit. ESPECIALLY in these last issues. This was a cathartic read.

I'm conflicted.
On one hand, the dialogue, paneling and artwork are beyond top notch. It's a sheer pleasure to look at.
On the other, some of these retcons are bad. Jaka not having any romantic feelings for Cerebus after the greenhouse scenein HS destroys their reunion and departure in C&S, one of my favorite moments in the whole series, and undermines all of Jaka's Story.
I also wasn't fond of Elrod and Roach being Cerebus' mental constructs and so vanishing away forever.
Cerebus getting what's coming to him is great. Coming to terms with himself is also great. The AU with Joanne hit all the right notes. While I don't normally like a scene where the author talks to their character, it worked very well here.
It's a very, very good ending, but the retcons make it fall short of C&S for me.

Right? Back in C&S I thought the moon was just a photo at first, but Gerhard and/or Sim are just fucking great at drawing celestial bodies.

I'm still sorta stunned at just how small the bit that people refuse to read Cerebus for was. Such a tiny, tiny part of this great story. It's a fucking travesty that's all it took to turn so many people away from the entire work.

When I was reading the Cerebus Cover Art Treasury, they talked about how they made stuff like snowfall or stars for their covers by putting white paint down with a toothbrush.
This is such great shit.

Just looked that book up, according to reviews it's an art book that has very little commentary. Which is a shame, cause the commentary on how these works are made sounds like the most interesting part. I would've never thought of doing that with a toothbrush.

I gave up on Cerebus because I was buying the floppies, and the floppies turned into utter shit, long letter columns, rants from the writer, garbage backup comics...
Dave was selling the book at a premium and padding the fuck out of it, just to get to his precious #300.

Was Cerebus' love for Jaka always meant to be narcisstic infatuation? In their previous meetings, while he was his usual aggressive self, his love was portrayed as genuine and he respected Jaka no matter the choices she made. He got to see multiple facets of her personality in Jaka's Story and still stuck by her.
Here it seems like Cerebus desires Jaka solely as an object of his infatuation and would gladly have a higher being brainwash her and himself to preserve some idealized vision of themselves. Was there some flags I missed (apart from the one time he slapped her during HS and that he was later shown to genuinely apologize for) that indicated all of that before was just infatuation?

The lettering and visuals are amazing in a vacuum.
The actual story itself is choked by the presentation. Simple ideas and story beats are so drawn out and adorned with complex imagery and beautiful rendering and chaotic lettering to the point that it fails to be as effective as just telling the story in a simple fashion. I'm not keen on a big chunk of Cerebus because of things like this, but Rick's Story is really awful about it.

I also just don't care for the story itself and Dave's strange condemnation of every single character but Rick in the final issue.
