Hey you can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs. He's heroic at times but at the core he's pretty selfish and utilitarian, willing to step over certain boundaries to achieve his goals. Does he fly too close to the sun at times? Yeah, but such is the difficulty of the objectives he set for himself.
Besides, he learns from his mistake. After realizing he truly loves Fox more than he thought, he never pulls that shit ever again. Will heavily disagree here. He had many chances to kill the Gargoyles but didn't take them because they were more useful for him as pawns. Most of his battles were done to achieve some other goal such as misdirection, to learn more of the Gargoyles for his experiments or some other obscure goal.
