What if the seven holes in Parappa's body were supposed to reference the shichi-ho? That way his failing body could mean he was born to be a bodhisattva candidate seeing as he literally has the word LOTUS in his name and he's the strongest gem bar the two who are effectively artificially made reinforced diamond (so Pads' still the strongest 'proper' gem as in jewel-ready).
Pads also seems to be the most painfully aware of the inherently painful nature of interpersonal relationship while still choosing to indulge those (which sets him apart from Craig). I'm starting to think that the implication might be that those seven holes were pointing to the need to fill them with seven treasures: after all when they were filled with ruby, which counts as one of those, he could move again for a while.
I admit that artificial corundum making him move around with zero effort and complications poses a large problem to this theory, but maybe it's really due to Phos having already manifested as the Buddha of the story at that point, so Pads' role is now a supporting one.
