It would because these kinds of things might indeed happen in shounen manga, but it is HORRIBLY rare, and a move like "making your bisexual character actually fucking gay and handling it seriously (despite being a comedy series)" is... I mean god damn, it's pretty much unthinkable unless the PREMISE was gay (like Shouraiteki ni Shindekure or the famous YagaKimi; both gay, shounen, and popular). Watamote has only ever teased homosexuality, except for a few (like count them on one hand) brief moments where the idea of lesbianism isn't portrayed comically.
On the bright side those moments are all with Ucchi and Katou, the gay and suspiciously gay characters.
1) Ucchi gives Tomoko chocolates and hides, probably embarrassed, while Tomoko finds them. Not played for laughs.
2) This page where Ucchi begins to realize she's not the only one who knows Tomoko "well". Not really played for laughs.
3) Katou date. A bunch of "played straight" moments with her (while she's being strangely romantic)
4) Katou lap pillow is portrayed seriously.
It's enough that I could see "true gay" being justified, but not enough that I wouldn't be hella surprised if it happened.
