So apparently the film is doing really well, it's at $90 million right now and is easily going to cross $100 million and beyond within the next few days. On an estimated $8.5 million budget. There's also the aforementioned rumors about the TV series returning, and of course, the comic is still running uninterrupted.
Even though I dislike most of what he has put out in recent years, I really have to respect Toriyama. He can put in the absolute minimal amount of effort to series production, dismiss the people who read his work as manchildren, write a derivative script for an already-existing character that people tired of years ago, and openly badmouth his coworkers while maintaining a flippant and carefree attitude in interviews, and everyone just eats it up. To the point that people spend hours upon hours speculating over offhand lines from him, and he can get a company to employ hundreds of people and expend tens of millions of dollars based on a Sparknotes summary of a plot that he wrote in a week. Even that tax scandal a couple years back didn't slow him down. He's seemingly incapable of not printing money no matter what he does. We can only dream of being so revered and successful.
He has won at life and I hope to have even 1% of the success and freedom that he does. Who else can say (in usual comical and flippant Toriyama fashion) "my series is stupid and the only adults who like it are manchildren" AND STILL have those same fans gives him $100+ million to see four TV episodes strung together? Who else can hand a company a sketch and paragraph and have them make entire episodes out of it, worked on by hundreds of people, before he even sends them the next memo detailing the actual plot? Who else can get various companies with hundreds of workers to change their directions on a major character halfway through production by sending a small memo? Who else would answer an actor concerned about their major character's direction with "who cares he sucks lol"?
