Financially it isn't of course, that's not even debatable.
However the big backlash towards everything super is because people realized or finally got their confirmation that toriyama is a better artist than writer and that he editorial staff did at least half the work to make db, especially Z great.
Meanwhile, toyo is an okay ish artist with almost no talent for structuring a comic book.
The anime, while nice at the very very end, lost it's picture esque quality, meaning the more serious and stylistic shots got replaced by something that can only be referred to as "ATATATA" shots.
Not to mention the few retcons that happened didn't do the fandom any favors.
But the fundamental and biggest problem with DBS is that one of the most important parts in dragonball, the powerups, are never earned and come out of a want instead of a need. Goku NEEDED to be strong to defeat frieza, gohan NEEDED to be strong to beat cell and goku again NEEDED to be strong enough to beat kid buu. DBS is more about marketing dragonball transformations than actually doing something worth while, like inspiring a whole generation of anime fans or manga artists.
