I'll add that the tactics they used seemed a natural evolution of older bait threads.
At the start of the last hiatus, there was a repetition of the bait thread cycle from hiatuses past where people copy-pasted large critiques or cringe inducing praises of Hunter x Hunter for low effort (You)s.
This time around people in the threads used google for anything that looked like it took more than 5 brain cells to write. Vwah-lah, you'd find they got it from Reddit, GameFAQs, a blog, or an older 4chan post, etc. Obviously these threads gained a reputation no one took seriously because it kept being called out. Everyone who paid attention understood they were falseflags.
Suddenly instead of just one copy-pasted diatribe for the OP, they changed tactics and made every reply a copy-paste. Obviously the asymmetry of effort in trying to debunk everything they posted made any rational person who values their time quit. So the falseflaggers would pretend they won despite making no relevant or well substantiated points.
People started buying into the falseflag again since they only posted things that praised the series while making us look obnoxious in how they did so. They called themselves hunterchads when they introduced this tactic.
