The key is to find a way that makes learning engaging, especially if you're undisciplined like me.
I started with learning hiragana and katakana and attaining a decent grasp of kanji as a concept before immersing myself in the language by reading VNs alongside text hookers and shitty TL software.
Sure, that came at the cost of understanding what the fuck was going on, but I still derived enjoyment from what I could understand and from the very fact that I could understand it.
Months passed as I kept doing this and eventually, the TL software was no longer needed.
