I recently binged through all the Battle of the Gods and after DB content, and when I got to Broly it was almost startling how decent it was. Even the Battle of the Gods and Resurrection F movies were largely mediocre, meandering, not very interesting looking affairs that feel like they should be half as long as they were. If you really wanted new, "official," Dragon Ball content it sort of scratched the itch but in retrospect they weren't really all that good as their own things. And then people bitch back and forth about the Super anime and manga and their qualities and relative comparisons and so on.
But Broly was an actual movie. Things were paced, the characters had their own interests and motivations and goddamn fucking characters. None of it was spectacular, but combined with how cool everything looked and was animated, it completely sold the idea of "Dragonball Movie." Things ended up not quite sticking the landing in the final act, where Cheelai and Lemo kind of disappear for a bit and Broly isn't really given much time to come to grips with his complicated relationship with his father. But at this point you're treating Dragon Ball like it deserves to be considered an actual movie, which is kind of a step up from the usual. It still has it's missteps, but it was fun enough and entertaining both visually and comedically like you want a Dragon Ball movie to be.
